It won’t be your average Monday afternoon when Red Baraat, the Brooklyn, New York, bhangra band take the stage at American University of Sharjah today, February 20, at 5:30 p.m in the Main Auditorium.
Called “one of the best party bands around” by National Public Radio in the US, the eight-member fusion band combines North Indian bhangra music with elements of go-go, rock and jazz. The group has received worldwide praise for its singular sound, which is fueled by three master rhythm makers, the muscle of horns, a raucous guitar and a booming sousaphone.
The group is especially known for their eight-piece dhol and brass ensemble, stated Red Baraat’s official website.
Previous venues the band has performed at include the White House and the Bonnaroo Festival. The group is performing at AUS today as part of its ongoing worldwide tour. The have also release a number of albums.
The show is a collaboration between the AUS Cultural Events Committee, the American Cultural Club, the Indian Cultural Club and the US Consulate General Dubai, which is sponsoring the concert.
The event is open only to members of the AUS Community, and admission is free.
